Is Skin Care Necessary for Kids?

While we all imagine baby’s skin to be perfectly smooth and soft, it actually takes a lot care to make sure that it stays healthy. From dry and flaky to red and itchy, there are a number of things that can go wrong on the skin of a newborn. For this reason, there are several things you will need to do to keep your baby’s skin as healthy as it can be. These include:

  • Limiting bathtime: Though it is normal for adults to shower every day, babies don’t need to bathe more than two or three times a week. Frequent bathing will dry out the skin and remove the natural oils and other substances that help to protect your baby’s skin from infections and irritants.

  • Using gentle skincare products: Don’t use adult shampoo, soap, or facial wash on babies. These products will be much too harsh for the sensitive skin of a newborn. Until your baby is at least a year old, it is best to use products that are specifically formulated for infants, since they will contain no dyes, deodorants, alcohols, or other ingredients that may be harmful.

  • Moisturizing: Since baby skin is especially prone to dryness, you will want to keep it as moisturized as possible. Again, use lotions that are specifically formulated with babies in mind.

  • Avoiding sun exposure: When possible, avoid letting your baby get direct sun exposure for at least the first six months. If being in the sun is unavoidable, apply generous amounts of sunscreen to your baby’s skin.

  • Expect the unexpected: Try not to get freaked out if your baby gets a rash or develops acne. This is perfectly normal for newborns. If you become concerned, talk to your pediatrician to make sure it’s nothing serious.
